Embedding Functional Skills into vocational learning

In order to demonstrate to Ofsted that organisations are serious in the improvement of the English and mathematics skills of their learners, it will be necessary for them to up-skill vocational and academic staff to support the delivery of Functional Skills. Start preparing now by engaging with EM Skills and Runway Training.

Who is the course for?

  • Non-specialist practitioners who are responsible for the delivery of Functional Skills
  • Vocational practitioners who wish to embed Functional Skills in their teaching
  • Managers who are responsible for the development of staff who will be delivering Functional Skills
  • What is the course aim?

    Participants will be more secure in their knowledge and understanding of Functional Skills qualifications and be more confident in delivering the subjects.

    What are the course objectives?

  • To introduce a range of approaches for delivering Functional Skills in a classroom setting, the workplace and in the community
  • To ensure delegates understand the key aspects of Functional Skills assessment methodology
  • To give delegates more confidence in their own English and Mathematics skills
  • How will participants benefit?

  • By having access to the latest tools and strategies to improve and assist in the teaching of Functional English and Mathematics
  • By feeling more confident in taking responsibility for assessing Functional English SLC
  • What is the content of the course?

    Session 1 Introduction
    Establishment of Objectives.
    Current practice – how assessors are supporting learners.
    Session 2

    Review:
    Standard, coverage and range for English reading and writing
    Establish key issues with teaching English reading and writing and delegates existing knowledge
    Techniques/approaches to teaching English
    Use of amplification of English standards to look for naturally occurring opportunities in own teaching.

    Session 3 Review:
    Standard, coverage and range for English SLC.
    Assessment:
    Look for naturally-occurring evidence in own teaching
    Documentation that is required for SLC
    How to assess SLC
    Session 4 Review:
    Standard, coverage and range for mathematics
    Explanation of how the Mathematics Functional Skills assessments are constructed around Representing, Analysing and Interpreting
    Use of amplification of mathematics standards to look for naturally occurring opportunities in own teaching
    How to overcome key issues with teaching Mathematics
    Session 5 Summary of the day
    Action plan

    Course delivery

    The course will be delivered as a one day workshop.
